A Mediterranean diet may help prevent memory and thinking problems later in life.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical School looked at the diets of over 700 people, then conducted a M.R.I. brain scans about six years later. Small areas of brain damage on the scans indicated problems with cognition, said scientists.
Those who most closely stuck to a Mediterranean diet, high in veggies, fruit, beans and fish and low in meat and dairy, lowered their chances of having those areas of brain damage by more than a third, according to their research.
Previous research has shown a Mediterranean diet may protect against Alzheimer's disease.
