A Kansas man is behind bars at the Washington County Jail on charges stemming from an incident in November where he allegedly restrained a boy and his father in their home, stole from them and threatened to kill them -- at one point allegedly holding a rifle to the father's head.
James A. Reed, 41, of Thayer, Kan. faces a charge of robbery by fear or force. During a hearing held Thursday at the Washington County Courthouse, the judge set his bond at $500,000.
Reed was extradited to Washington County on Wednesday from Neosho County, Kan. where he was arrested on a warrant out of Oklahoma.
According to the affidavit, the charge resulted from an incident occurring at around 8:20 a.m. on Nov. 16, 2009 when an investigator with the Washington County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the 5000 block of N. 4030 Rd. in reference to an armed robbery complaint.
Upon arrival, the investigator spoke with the alleged vicitm who said at around 7:30 a.m. he had gone outside of his residence and had just walked into his garage when Reed confronted him, pointing a rifle at his head -- telling him he would kill him.
The man told the investigator Reed then escorted him back into the residence and, after tying him and his juvenile son up and placing them in seperate chairs, identified himself to the father and son as James Reed from Thayer, Kan.
According to the father's account in the report, Reed told the man and his son he would kill them. While the two were restrained, Reed took the father's wallet, $500 in cash and asked for the keys to the family vehicle's, which the father directed his son to give to Reed, giving him keys to a late model Honda Pilot SUV.
The father told the investigator Reed was at the residence nearly 45 minutes before he left driving away in the Honda Pilot.
Reed's next court date is set for Feb. 19.
