Absentee voting registration for Washington County school elections ends Wednesday

Voters in Washington County who want to vote by absentee ballot in the Feb. 9, Annual School Election for Caney Valley, Copan and Collinsville have until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, to apply.

Any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot for any election in which he or she is eligible to vote, but must be registered at an address within the geographical boundaries of a school district to be eligible to vote in the school district’s election.

Voters may pick up absentee ballot applications at the County Election Board Office located at 420 S. Johnstone Ave., Room 101.

Those voting by absentee ballot will recieve the ballot in the mail and must return the ballot by mail in time to be in the hands of the election board by 7 p.m. on election day in order to be counted.

Registered voters in Washington County who became physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, will not have to miss the 2010 Annual School Election, according to County Election Board Secretary Yvonne House.

She said state law permits registered voters who will be unable to go to the polls because of incapacitation to vote on an emergency basis, explaining that physical incapacitation includes a variety of conditions including injury, illness and childbirth that prevent a person from voting in person at the polls on the day of the election.

Those fitting or knowing an individual fitting into this catergory are encouraged to contact the County Election Board office by calling 337-2850.

Filing for candidacy for Board of Education seats in Washington County’s five school districts ended early December with only two seats being vied for.
